"Monster Hunter Wilds" Losing Players Fast – Can New Content Turn the Tide?

Even though "Monster Hunter Wilds" only launched three months ago, its player numbers are dropping significantly. SteamCharts data shows the game peaked at over 318,000 average players in March, but last month, that number crashed to just around 21,781.

For "Monster Hunter" fans, it's normal to beat the main story, tackle some challenges, then take a break until new content drops. But "Wilds" is bleeding players way faster than previous games in the series.

While "Wilds" was a massive commercial hit for Capcom, helping them rake in record profits, its player retention isn't looking good. Its launch peak hit a staggering 1,384,608 players, but by May, that peak dwindled to 149,903. Overall, "Wilds" has lost about 97% of its peak player count. Compare that to "Monster Hunter: World," which, even after seven years, never saw a drop beyond 92%.

Looking at the recent 30-day player loss, "World" only dipped by 14.08%, and "Rise" by 18%, while "Wilds" blew past both. Right now, "Monster Hunter: World" even has about 3,000 more concurrent players than "Wilds."

So, what's going on? Players are pointing to a few issues: a significant increase in cheaters, rough performance optimization, and a sense that the game is somewhat lacking in content. Steam reviews back this up, with "Wilds" sitting at a "Mixed" 57.43% positive rating – one of the lowest in the series.

It's not just PC players feeling it; the PS5 version seems to be struggling too. A post in Japan recently got a lot of attention, showing physical copies of "Monster Hunter Wilds" already selling for half price at used game stores. Many Japanese players are echoing the sentiment that the game lacks enough to do.

The good news? Capcom's got a "free update" planned for late June. This update promises new monsters, a long-awaited weapon appearance system, and other gameplay tweaks. This could be just what "Wilds" needs to reignite player interest and bring hunters back to the wilds.
